Apple CarPlay gets a big makeover

At the opening of its annual developer conference (WWDC) being held this week, Apple previewed not only its new iOS 16 system, but also the next generation of its popular in-car CarPlay app.

This will take up even more space in the cabin by being able to provide content to several screens simultaneously, for example. This, of course, when the vehicle manufacturer allows it, as many continue to spend a lot of time and money designing their own infotainment systems.

CarPlay will be able to take over the dashboard behind the wheel and display the dials in its own way, while allowing the driver to customize the style and configuration, as well as the type of information found there, including maps Apple navigation.

In addition, it will be possible to control a greater number of functions through CarPlay, such as the radio or the air conditioning. Widgets will be added, whether for music, weather, sports or other. Increased connectivity with the home will also be promoted.

This first look at the new CarPlay is promising, but we will have to be patient: Apple mentions that the first vehicles to integrate it will be announced towards the end of 2023. We also wonder how backward compatible it will be with existing vehicles. . Further details will come in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Apple’s car project is still floundering…
