APEC Summit | Trudeau in San Francisco next week

(Washington) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to travel to San Francisco next week for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, and the Minister of International Trade, Mary Ng, will also participate in this official trip, from November 15 to 17.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office says Trudeau will focus on ways to drive climate-friendly economic growth with Canada’s allies and partners.

The Canadian delegation will focus in particular on the liberalization and opening of trade and investment, on business opportunities arising from the digital economy and on “women’s economic empowerment”.

Mr. Trudeau is also committed to fostering open economic cooperation and the elimination of trade barriers for the benefit of people on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, “as Canada increases and diversifies its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. “.

Like previous APEC meetings, this year’s summit, November 11-17, is expected to be accompanied by large public protests around issues such as climate change and income inequality.

“By opening new markets for Canadian products and innovation and ensuring that the whole world can invest in Canada, we are achieving concrete results for the middle class,” Mr. Trudeau wrote in the press release.

“By working together, we will create new opportunities for our workers and businesses, advance the fight against climate change, and foster economic growth centered on the well-being of all. »
