Vegetable gardens are no longer just for garden owners. From now on, the return to the land can be done in an apartment. A market that some have been able to capture.

35 m², on the seventh floor of a Parisian building: nothing to discourage Paul Lemonnier in his gardening desires. To get started, all you need is a power outlet, a watering can, and organic seeds nestled in clumps. Roots will grow in a tray of water, and leaves under artificial light. “It’s always nice to say that it comes from home, that you didn’t go and get it at the local supermarket.“, appreciates Paul. A satisfaction on the plate, but a big investment at the start: 350 euros minimum for the furniture, and 6 euros for the ball of seeds.

Aromatic herbs and peppers

Can a living room vegetable garden compete with commercial prices? “There are varieties for which it will obviously never be more interesting to grow at home, typically the 99 cent bunch of radishes. On the other hand, aromatic herbs and peppers are more advantageous“, explains Joséphine Thébault, co-founder of the company “Urban cuisine”. Large or small, indoor gardens are a favorite among the French. 150,000 copies are sold each year, with a price often exceeding a hundred ‘euros.
