D-1 before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, but the events have already begun. This Thursday July 25, the French women’s football and handball teams play their first group match (live on France Télévisions and france.tv). Antoine Dupont’s teammates continue in rugby at 7 and will play two meetings during the day.
The three events not to be missed : rugby 7, handball, football
French team sport is celebrating. No fewer than three French teams will be on the bill this Thursday. Antoine Dupont’s teammates will face Fiji (at 3:30 p.m.) for their third group match, before the quarter-finals or, failing that, the classification matches for 9th to 12th place.
In handball, the French women, defending champions after their victory in Tokyo in 2021, will face the Hungarians, 10th in the 2023 World Cup, for their first meeting in the Olympic tournament (at 19 hours).
Then in the evening, Hervé Renard’s players will enter the competition against Colombia at 21 hours. Finalists in the last Nations League, the Blues are challenging the South Americans who, like the French, were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Cup.
The three French to follow: Riva, Renard, Nze Minko
Every French match could highlight a Tricolor. In rugby 7, behind Paulin Riva, the captain, there is obviously Antoine Dupont, captain of the French XV who chose to devote himself to this discipline to participate in the Games.
On the women’s side, Wendie Renard wants to quench her thirst for trophies. The Lyon player, who has already won everything with her club, would like to finally win a trophy with her national team, she who celebrated her 34 years on the 20th July.
Among the handball players, Estelle Nze Minko, already present during the Tricolores’ title in Tokyo, will have the difficult task of leading her team once again to the top. As reigning Olympic and world champions, the Bleues are highly anticipated.
The complete program
France will not be the only nation represented on Thursday. In addition to the three matches of the French teams, several football and women’s handball matches in addition to rugby 7s will take place. On the favorites’ side, Argentina, finalist of the world rugby 7s circuit against the Blues, will face Australia at 2:30 p.m. On the round ball side, the Canadians, defending champions and future opponents of the Tricolores, will have to get rid of New Zealand at 17 hours. In handball, the Norwegians, finalists of the 2023 World Cup against the French, will face the Swedes at 21 hours.
There will also be the first archery events to follow, starting at 9:30 a.m. for the women (including Frenchwoman Lisa Baberlin, European champion) and 2:15 p.m. for the men, including Jean-Charles Valladont, Olympic vice-champion in 2016 in Rio.
