“Antigone”, Yann Liotard and Marie-Claire Redon

“Antigone was born to share love and not hatred, to defend the weak against the powerful, to fight against injustice, and here she is condemned, locked up, almost dead”, victim of the law, of reason and of terrible powers of Creon. A classic reissued many times, the work of Sophocles takes the path of the album here in a unique adaptation by Yann Liotard. In refined and poetic writing, the author retraces the journey of this heroine who fought for justice, love and siblings. Like a chorus in the time of Greek theater, a few mice presented on a red background comment on the words and the tragic destiny of Antigone. Then, as a counterweight to this color, blue dominates the war scenes and the heroine’s journey. The illustration by Marie-Claire Redon is full of details and evokes, in a fantastic style, the complexity of this story. The effect is reinforced by the staging of half-human, half-cat characters which establishes the distance necessary to absorb this cruel destiny.
