The government wants to make it compulsory to dispense certain antibiotic medications individually in pharmacies. A measure which aims to fight against waste while several of these drugs are affected by a risk of shortage.

In the future, your pharmacist may no longer give you full boxes of antibiotics, but just the number of tablets prescribed. Concretely, for 8 days, 8 tablets, not one more. The remaining tablets will be used by another patient. Pharmacists will be in greater demand. “What do we put? In small bags? Do we repackage? Do we have to print instructions? That’s a false idea”estimates Béatrice Clairaz-Mahiou, president of the Hauts-de-Seine pharmacists’ union – USPO.

Medicines that cannot be shared

The Federation of Pharmacy Unions also places emphasis on medications that are not shareable. “It’s a little bit of DIY. Last year, we had a severe shortage of antibiotics, of Amoxicillin for children, in pediatric form, but it turns out that it’s a bottle of syrup. And this bottle of syrup is indivisible”indicates Philippe Besset, its president.
