(Ottawa) The Canadian telecommunications regulator said Wednesday that retailer Gap had agreed to pay $ 200,000 for alleged violation of Canada’s anti-spam laws.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said it sent a warning letter to the U.S. clothing retailer in December 2018 telling it it had received complaints about its email practices.
The agency’s compliance and enforcement officer launched a formal investigation last June as Canadians continued to file complaints.
The CRTC says it has reason to believe that between January 2018 and August 2021, the company sent commercial electronic messages to Canadians without first obtaining their consent.
In addition, the messages did not always offer the option of easily unsubscribing, as required by anti-spam legislation.
After being made aware of the concerns of the CRTC’s compliance and investigations officer, Gap made changes to its marketing practices and worked with the organization to reach a resolution.
