Canada’s Jewish leaders are sounding the alarm as the number of hate incidents targeting Jews has doubled in one year.
B’nai Brith Canada says it has documented nearly 5,800 incidents of anti-Semitism in 2023, including acts of violence, harassment and vandalism. In 2022, there had been fewer than 2,800 such incidents.
In all, 77 violent incidents were reported in 2023, more than three times the 25 recorded in 2022.
Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy at B’nai Brith, says this is the highest number of anti-Semitic incidents in the country since the Jewish community advocacy organization began tracking the situation , in 1982.
This left Jewish Canadians feeling alone, ostracized and unwanted in their own country, he argued.
Henry Topas, regional director for Quebec, explained at a press conference that the incidents could not be attributed to a particular group in the company.
“Anti-Semitic incidents in Canada can be attributed to the far left, the far right and those acting at the behest of foreign actors,” he explained.
