“Anti-Semitic acts in France have tripled since last fall and 887 incidents have been recorded in this first half of the year alone.”while there were 304 during the same period in 2023, Gérald Darmanin said on Friday, August 9. The resigning Minister of the Interior was traveling to rue des Rosiers in Paris to pay tribute to the victims of the attack that occurred on August 9, 1982.

“Anti-Semitism, which has always existed, is no longer hidden. It is an insult to the dead, the wounded, the humiliated and to our History,” he stressed during the tribute ceremony. He returned to this attack which left six dead and 22 injured. “Justice has not yet been served for this despicable and anti-Semitic crime”he lamented, while only one of the four suspects is in the hands of French justice.

Gérald Darmanin also reiterated the “the government’s unwavering support for the Jews of France”he felt that “These are the words that today fuel the anti-Semitism that affects us all” And “which urge us today to lead a cultural battle.”

“We are facing a wave of anti-Semitism, a wave of rare magnitude, stronger, more violent”the Prime Minister had already indicated last May. During the first three months of 2024, 366 anti-Semitic facts have been recorded in France, or four anti-Semitic acts per day. This figure is up 300% compared to the same period in 2023.

“It is the anti-Semitic speech that is being released, that is being unbridled, it is violence, it is intimidation, it is letters of abuse, insults, threats”, Gabriel Attal had then detailed. This increase began following October 7, with 1,200 acts recorded between the Hamas attack in Israel and the end of 2023. In France, 60% of anti-religious acts are anti-Semitic.
