Since the start of the war in Ukraine, anti-Russian sentiment has steadily risen in neighboring countries, formerly under the yoke of the USSR. In the Baltic states or in Poland, the remnants of the Soviet era are being unbolted.

One after the other, the Soviet statues have been dismantled and the symbols driven out of the landscape in recent weeks, in countries of the former Eastern bloc, such as Poland or the Baltic countries, traumatized by the war in Ukraine. In Latvia, the monument to the liberators of Riga (Latvia), was destroyed last week by order of the government.

This building paid homage to the Soviet soldiers who defeated Nazi Germany. But for many Latvians, it mainly represented the beginning of the occupation of their country, after the Second World War. An event widely commented on by Russian television. This is not an isolated case. In Estonia, a T-34 tank was a souvenir from the Second World War, it was removed from public space two weeks ago. “This tank symbolizes the occupation of our country. The Russians are doing the same thing in Ukraine as what the Soviet Union did here”comments an Estonian.
