Ukraine suffered a large attack by Russian drones and missiles on the night of Sunday 5 to Monday 6 November. It reportedly injured 8 people and destroyed the Odessa Museum of Fine Arts. To neutralize drones, the Ukrainian army is recruiting computer scientists specializing in jamming, capable of turning the devices against their owner.
They scout and hit positions relentlessly. Drones are everywhere on the battlefield. How to neutralize them? This is one of Ukraine’s biggest fights, a technological and secret fight, where computers can become weapons. The 20 Heures de France 2 teams were able to follow for the first time the soldiers in charge of the jamming war.
“It’s dangerous for my life”
The meeting takes place at a training camp, where new recruits learn to use a strange rifle that disrupts the GPS and video signals of drones. “You should not hold it like this, nor like that, but at an angle of 45°“, explains a soldier. However, these jammer rifles also have their limits. “The problem is that when the cannon works, it emits electromagnetic waves that can be seen by the enemy. As a result, when I start using it, the Russians can bombard me with mortar shells, it’s dangerous for my life“, indicates a fighter. Another danger: some drones fly much too high, so more powerful equipment is needed.
