Last part of an “involuntary” trilogy that Stéphane Brizé devotes to the world of work, Another world stands this time on the side of employers. After playing an unemployed worker in The law of the market (which earned him an interpretation prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015), then a trade unionist in In war, Vincent Lindon, always brilliant, this time slips into the skin of a corporate executive.

Stéphane Brizé has this gift of plunging the spectator into a very realistic situation from the outset, this time by having him enter a law firm, where we are trying to settle the details of a divorce process between Philippe (Vincent Lindon) and Anne (Sandrine Kiberlain). Their relationship has deteriorated over the years, in particular because of the professional demands resulting from the position that Philippe occupies. The accents of truth in this sequence are striking.

In fact, Stéphane Brizé paints the portrait of a man in full questioning, in all areas of his existence. Parallel to what is happening in his private life, Philippe must also manage a professional problem. In the company for which he works, the French subsidiary of a large international industrial group, he must organize a restructuring imposed by the American management, which will cause heavy damage on a human level.

Faithful to the approach taken in the two previous feature films, the French filmmaker orchestrates fascinating discussions between the various speakers, muscular on a professional level (very good performance by Marie Drucker, best known as a journalist), moving on a personal level. Opposite Vincent Lindon, Sandrine Kiberlain is particularly moving, in a film evoking with great accuracy the new reality of the world of work.

Launched at the Venice Film Festival last year, Another world is currently showing.
