The Spanish athlete has had an exceptional year, like his club. Recovering well from his left heel injury that had bothered him in 2020, Gil led the league with 18 assists, in addition to scoring four times.

Thanks to the 29-year-old veteran’s prowess, New England set a high point in MLS history with 73 points. The “Revs” were also 12-1-3 when Gil scored a goal or an assist.

Since arriving in suburbs of Boston in 2019, the midfielder has been named the Garber Tour All-Star team twice and was named Newcomer of the Year.

Gil easily outstripped his competitors for the Landon Donovan. He garnered 52.07% of the votes from players, teams and members of the media, ahead of Hany Mukhtar (11.80%) of the Nashville SC and Joao Paulo (4.90%) of the Seattle Sounders.

He is the third Spaniard to be named MVP after Alejandro Pozuelo last year and David Villa in 2016. He is also the sixth consecutive Spanish speaker to receive the honor.
