Anne Hidalgo struggles to mobilize voters in Guadeloupe

The candidate of the Socialist Party continues her trip to the West Indies. Saturday, February 12, she ended her visit to Guadeloupe with a public meeting in Basse-Terre. If the socialist candidate takes pains to mobilize the Domiens behind her, they were not very numerous to have come to listen to her.

They are a hundred, some wear red caps with the Hidalgo 2022 logo, but we are far from a meeting atmosphere. During this public meeting in Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe to mobilize voters to vote for the socialist candidate, the senator and former minister Victorin Lurel put all his energy into it: “We have a good candidate who has experience. She will be President of the French Republic!”

But Anne Hidalgo’s speech does not arouse immense enthusiasm. “Politics is not just clicksshe says. Politics is meeting, it’s companionship, it’s moments like the one we live here together.” No hostility though. Marcelle believes in it… Well, almost: “I wonder what’s going to come out of all of this.”

Little interest in national politics

The health crisis has particularly demobilized the inhabitants. Cédric, who came curiously, would like the inhabitants to mobilize more.

“Guadeloupeans do not necessarily feel concerned by national politics. We also need to be able to get involved, carry our voice. We have our specificities, it’s true. But we must not forget that we belong to a whole.”

It is abstention that plays the favorites here, despite the mobilization of support from Anne Hidalgo. The socialist candidate is currently playing the supporting roles.
