“Madame Casabonne did not meet the militants of Charlesbourg,” declared the leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec, Éric Duhaime.
Local opposition would have been very strong. The members felt that the Montrealer would be a candidate parachuted into this riding, which was displeasing.
“She never wanted to impose herself,” insisted Mr. Duhaime.
Last week, the chief had confirmed the “interest” of the actress to be a candidate in the riding of Charlesbourg.
Mme Casabonne was also in Quebec this weekend, wanting to participate in the annual general meeting of the party association in Charlesbourg.
Éric Duhaime also points out that Ms. Casabonne will not be a candidate in another riding in the Quebec region.
“Virtually all the other candidates in Quebec are chosen,” he said, arguing, however, that the actress “will play a leading role for the Conservative Party of Quebec in the next election.”
Anne Casabonne was recently a candidate for the Conservatives in the by-election in the riding of Marie-Victorin.
She finished 4th, winning nearly 10.4% of the vote, even ahead of the Liberal candidate.
This was a surprise, especially since the Conservatives had won only 0.7% in this riding in the past. After the defeat, Ms Casabonne immediately confirmed that she would stand again in the general elections next October.
