In the latest installment of the ‘Pinzgauer Powerfrau’ series, editor Sarah Braun caught up with professional ice hockey player Anna Meixner to discuss her passion for the game and the various hurdles she’s faced along her journey.
PINZGAU. During her interview, Anna Meixner shared insights about her sports career, the challenges she’s encountered, and her recent move to Canada while currently playing in Sweden. Editor Sarah Braun had the privilege of speaking with the dedicated athlete via phone, gaining a glimpse into her life at 30 years old.
From Passion to Profession
When asked why she pursued a career in professional ice hockey, Anna Meixner’s answer came straight from the heart: “I wanted to transform my hobby into a career. I first stepped onto the ice at just three years old, even attending an ice hockey school with a pacifier. That initial experience ignited my love for the sport, a passion that has only grown over the years. As I got older, I worked low-paying jobs to fund my ice hockey dreams. I turned professional at the age of 27, a decision I have never regretted. Moving to Sweden was a dream come true—though challenging, it ultimately made me a stronger person.”
Overcoming Challenges
Anna Meixner opened up about the struggles she has faced in her professional journey. “Life is filled with challenges, and there are days when I find it hard to get out of bed. On those days, it’s essential to muster the strength to rise and tackle the day with determination. I’ve experienced many such phases, and it’s from these difficult moments that I’ve learned the most and built my mental resilience. Giving in to lethargy during tough times is not the right approach,” she reflected.
Global Friendships
Anna’s love for ice hockey remains unwavering. One of the most rewarding aspects of her career, she noted, is the opportunity to travel to various destinations around the globe that she might never have visited otherwise. Through her journey, she has formed lasting friendships worldwide, fostering a sense of community regardless of location. “Being part of a team is incredible—you win or lose together, and the team spirit makes this sport truly special,” Anna shared with enthusiasm.
A Thoughtful Move to Canada
When discussing her transition from Sweden to the Canadian Ice Hockey League, Anna expressed, “I made this decision thoughtfully, considering that I’m already 30. I know my playing days are limited, and competing in the world’s best league is a dream for any professional. I’m grateful I seized this opportunity. However, I’m aware that the time difference will make it harder to see my family. I’m very close to them, frequently connecting with my parents, brother, nieces, and nephews, so moving to Canada will be a significant adjustment for me.”
Believing in Yourself
To wrap up the interview, Anna offered valuable advice for young girls who aspire to join male-dominated sports. “Ice hockey has been my passion, and while I’ve encountered obstacles, each one presented a chance for growth. Always believe in yourself, regardless of what others may say. Never give up on your dreams and take action to achieve them,” she advised.
“It’s crucial for young girls to see what I do as admirable and aspire to be like me. I’m also passionate about promoting Austrian ice hockey and making it more popular,” Anna concluded.
