More and more shelters are full in the context of an increase in the number of abandoned pets. A situation that puts these establishments under tension.
Unfortunately, summer too often rhymes with abandonment of animals. This is still the case this year. In a refuge in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), 35 dogs have been welcomed in recent days, making the place full. “There is an upsurge in dropouts, it’s unimaginable”deplores Catherine Conti, director of the Jean Duflos refuge.
The post-Covid period seems to be one of the causes of this resurgence of dropouts. The end of telework, leaving animals alone at home, sometimes inducing changes in behavior, is put forward by some. In the shelters, maximum attention is paid to the profile of future masters and their understanding with the animals. “It is clear that it is a commitment”, reacts young couple who have just adopted a cat. In addition to being immoral, these abandonments are illegal. Offenders face a three-year prison sentence and a fine of 45,000 euros.
