Gardeners, who mow or clear brush at home, sometimes involuntarily injure animals. These are collected in a refuge in Châtellerault, in Vienne.

In a shelter, a hedgehog was brought by a gardener, who injured him while clearing brush. In this center, about fifty hedgehogs are cared for. Babies as young as five days old need to be watched. “His mom went in a robot lawnmower”, explains Lydia Bourdeau, who works at the Poitou wildlife center. She advises against running gear at night when the hedgehogs are hunting.

In spring, it is even recommended to do nothing, so as not to disturb the animals. The agglomeration of Grand Poitiers has thus decided not to clear brush. “If there is no particular issue, use, security, biodiversity is preserved. We let the vegetation grow spontaneously”, explains Thomas Rodier, from the Nature and Biodiversity Department of Greater Poitiers. A small weasel was also collected, after the death of its mother, during the felling of a tree.
