Animal welfare should be taught in school

The government passed a provincial animal welfare law in December 2015.

Quebec legislators have understood that “animals are not property”, but that they experience emotions and physical and psychological pain. Consequently, animals were recognized in Bill 54 as “beings endowed with sentient beings and they have biological imperatives”.

According to research, a correlation exists between cruelty to animals and cruelty to children, women and elders. Teaching children to be compassionate towards animals encourages them to be compassionate towards people.

Some schools have introduced animal cruelty training programs as part of their curriculum. Basically, in these lessons, students learn that we are all connected, people and animals living on a fragile planet.

I believe that this type of training could be linked to the new course on citizenship and culture in Quebec, because it would include animal rights.
