Angus Reid Poll | Legault, the least popular prime minister in Canada

(Quebec) Quite a debacle for François Legault: he has become the least popular provincial prime minister in Canada, reveals an Angus Reid poll released Monday.

The satisfaction rate with regard to one’s job fell by 16 points in three months to reach only 31%, according to the survey carried out from November 24 to 1er December.

No less than 61% of Quebecers surveyed are dissatisfied. The discontent is such that 40% of those surveyed “strongly disapprove” of his performance; 21%, “moderately”. There are 8% undecided.

In September, François Legault was in sixth place in the list with 47% approval rate, just three points behind the leader. At the start of his second term a year ago, the Prime Minister of Quebec was even at the top of this list while 57% of Quebecers approved of his performance.

But his support has since faded. The first significant slide occurred in late spring. The 30% increase in MPs’ salaries had sparked controversy.

The discontent gained momentum this fall with the strike movement of state employees and the subsidy for the arrival of the Los Angeles Kings in Quebec.

The erosion of power may be to blame, but this factor is relative if we lend ourselves to the game of comparisons. The Premier of Saskatchewan, Scott Moe, in power since 2018 like François Legault, obtains an approval rate of 54%, which puts him in second place. Doug Ford, also prime minister for five years, is doing barely better than Mr. Legault with support from 34% of Ontarians. Discontent is great in the two most populous provinces of Canada.

Angus Reid’s traditional poll was relayed by the CAQ during the COVID-19 pandemic, when François Legault was in the lead with support exceeding 60% and even going up to 77% in spring 2020.

The online survey was carried out among 3,749 Canadians, including 602 Quebecers. The margin of error in Quebec is plus or minus four percentage points.

Newly elected, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is at the top of the list. It’s a honeymoon for the first Indigenous person from a First Nation to lead a province.
