“Anemones”, Xylitol | Le Devoir

Drum and bass and jungle are rhythmic ingredients that have been cooked up for almost thirty years by the artists of Planet Mu. However, Anemone is the very first album entirely devoted to the genre in the repertoire of the renowned label Composer and DJ Catherine Backhouse throws herself into it body and soul, offering eleven songs that evoke the soaring, almost meditative atmospheres of the productions of the Good Looking Records label, founded in the 1990s by LTJ Bukem — so much so that the nine minutes of Moebiusat the heart of the album, could pass for a tribute to his anthem Demon’s Theme (1992). By offering a feast of classic samples of the genre (the Amen Break a little everywhere, the Think Break prepared in slow motion on Maplin Syrup), Backhouse will delight nostalgics. However, the composer deploys a contemporary vision of the genre by exploring the multiple iterations of these rhythmic motifs — more garage/2 step on Dobro Jutroalmost juke on Dasameticulously ambient on the captivating Monte Mare at the end of the album.
