As soon as the invasion in Ukraine began, he went into exile in kyiv. At 61, Russian orthopedic surgeon Andreï Volna has been working in a hospital in the Ukrainian capital for almost two years. A decision stamped with the seal of morality. “It is a moral, ethical choice. I cannot leave this war aside. It is against my ancestors, my values and my beliefs”he explains.
“Russia has chosen the fascist path”
His departure is directly linked to the authoritarian inclination of President Vladimir Putin’s policies in recent years. “We have had enough. I thought about the European path, but Russia decided to find the fascist path”, says the doctor. His daily life is peppered with heavy operations on Ukrainian soldiers wounded at the front. A primordial role that he hopes will be effective in the context of the conflict. “We want to do everything possible to help Ukraine win.”
