(Jakarta) Le volcan indonésien Anak Krakatoa est entré en éruption vendredi, projetant une colonne de fumée de plus de trois kilomètres dans le ciel, ont indiqué les responsables de sa surveillance.
Les autorités n’ont pas fait état de dommages ou de victimes après l’éruption qui s’est produite à 8 h 46 locales (21 h 46 heure de l’Est).
L’Anak Krakatoa, une île volcanique, a émergé dans la mer à l’ouest de l’archipel au début du siècle dernier après l’éruption du Krakatoa en 1883, l’une des plus meurtrières de l’histoire.
L’Anak Krakatoa, qui signife « enfant du Krakatoa » en indonésien, a projeté des cendres dans le détroit de la Sonde, entre les îles indonésiennes de Java et de Sumatra
« Le haut de la colonne […] was observed 3,000 meters above the summit” of the volcano, Deny Mardiono, an official with the volcano monitoring station, said in a statement.
“The column of smoke was gray and black with a strong intensity towards the southwest,” he added.
He asked the public not to approach more than 5 km from the crater of the volcano.
The volcano’s alert level had been raised to the second-highest level in 2022, after a marked uptick in activity.
In 2018, the Anak Krakatoa crater partially collapsed when a violent eruption threw huge chunks of the volcano into the sea, triggering a deadly coastal tsunami. More than 400 people had lost their lives and hundreds of injuries had been recorded.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic and volcanic activity. The country has nearly 130 active volcanoes.
