Following a trial against the ‘Ndrangheta, 207 people were found guilty and received heavy sentences. Update on this extraordinary trial.

Of the 338 accused, 207 were found guilty and sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. The defendants are mafiosi, but also accomplices, high-ranking police officers, civil servants and local elected officials. A former senator was sentenced to 11 years in prison, following an extraordinary trial against the ‘Ndranghetaa mafia group which holds a virtual monopoly on cocaine trafficking in Europe.

A powerful organization

“The importance of this trial is enormous at the national level, but also at the European and global level. The ‘Ndrangheta is one of the most powerful organizations in the world”, assures Federico Cafiero De Raho, former anti-mafia attorney general. In 2007, a bloody vendetta in Germany projected the ‘Ndrangheta in the front of the scene. The bodies of six Italians are discovered in two vehicles. Long underestimated, the Calabrian octopus has expanded its ramifications and its modus operandi violent in around forty countries. The trial does not prevent the ‘Ndrangheta from prospering. Its annual turnover is estimated at around fifty billion euros worldwide.
