An unjustified strategy | The duty

The spread of the virus and the protection of the population are ongoing. However, people refractory to the vaccine show great naivety in thinking of escaping the virus. We now understand that we will have to learn to live with it, and that the entire population will eventually be immunized, either by being vaccinated or by having been infected with the virus. One can only hope that unvaccinated individuals will get through the disease without dying or developing long-term sequelae — which is far from certain.

In the meantime, the healthcare system has been badly tested, and there are few short-term solutions to avoid overflows in hospitals. We cannot refuse to treat the unvaccinated, even if they are largely responsible for their situation. Imposing a health tax on them will only have a very moderate incentive effect on vaccination and on hospitalizations, and will penalize these people too late for this to have a real influence on the epidemiological situation. But they can be confined for their own protection and that of society. For the measure to be fair, however, it would have to be based on a risk analysis that applies to the entire population.

Unfortunately, the Ministry of Public Health continues to manage the pandemic using zones and periods of general confinement, as if the whole of society were an extension of hospitals. However, this strategy is no longer justified given the major change in the context in which the virus is evolving.

Indeed, nearly 90% of the population is vaccinated, and drugs will soon be available. The government also has evidence from the health care system on hospitalization cases. It would therefore be appropriate to manage the situation in terms of protection rather than propagation. There would no longer be a need to resort to compulsory vaccination, to impose a health tax or to resort to generalized confinement. People less at risk could then have access to properly “profiled” vaccine passports and live more freely, while respecting health rules. Only people who are caught in the act of not adhering to the lockdown and health guidelines would be subject to sanctions by the existing normal monitoring system.
