an underestimated carbon footprint according to an association

While the organizing committee for the Olympic Games declares the games half as polluting as those in London, an association specializing in ecological transition is calling into question this assessment.

With the opening ceremony just a month away, questions continue to be asked about the carbon footprint of these Olympic Games. The organizing committee has abandoned the idea of communicating about the Games “carbon neutral”but it now promises to halve the carbon footprint of this event compared to previous editions.

And it’s a successful bet if we stick to the figures from the organizing committee. With 1.5 million tonnes of CO equivalent2the Paris Olympics would emit half as much as those in London. However, according to the Shifters, an association specializing in energy transition, some data are underestimated. This is the case, for example, of international travel, according to Paul Delanoë, author of a report on the subject: “Very few measures have been taken at this level, and this will result in the carbon budget set by the Paris 2024 organisation being exceeded.”

This Olympic carbon budget should therefore exceed two million tonnes of CO equivalent.2, which remains lower than previous editions. But to go further, the association recommends organizing fanzones all over the world: “We proposed eight fan zones on five continents, a bit like a music festival. In this way, instead of crossing the planet to see the Olympics, people would take the train, or their car, but that would remain a shorter trip.”

Too late for Paris 2024, but the association is campaigning to deploy these fan zones for the next major events.
