An outbreak of bird flu was detected on Saturday April 2 in a goose farm in Saint-Geniès, in the Périgord noir, according to information from France Bleu Périgord, confirmed by the Dordogne prefecture. The department had not been affected by avian influenza since the winter of 2015-2016.

Several poultry have tested positive. The prefecture plans to communicate on protective measures on Sunday but according to France Bleu Périgord, a slaughter operation has already taken place on Saturday.

A few days earlier, Wednesday, an outbreak of bird flu had been detected in the Lot, in Gignac. The town is less than 30 kilometers from Saint-Geniès. To prevent the spread of the virus, a protection zone had been set up by the Dordogne prefecture. Seven municipalities, neighboring Saint-Geniès, are concerned: Borrèze, Nadaillac, Salignac-Eyvigues, Orliaguet, Peyrillac-et-Millac, Cazoulès and Jayac. The movements and repositioning of poultry are prohibited there, except by derogation.

The episode of avian flu recorded this winter 2021-2022 is the most severe ever known in France, with more than 1,100 outbreaks in breeding and more than ten million poultry slaughtered.
