The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival opened under the sign of support for Ukraine and Russian opponents, with several directors from these two countries in the spotlight.

The opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival took place on Tuesday May 17. An edition marked by international news and particularly the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From the first days of the conflict, the Festival had announced that it would not welcome “the least body linked to the Russian government”while hailing the courage of those who, in Russia, “took the risk of protesting” against this war. The official competition therefore began with a film devoted to the life of Tchaikovsky, directed by the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov, who until recently had been banned from leaving his country.

We will also note the presentation of the film by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa. Like a tragic echo to the news, “The Natural history of destruction” deals with the destruction of German cities during the Second World War. his compatriot, Maksym Nakonechnyi, presents a first film at the Cannes Film Festival: “Butterfly Vision”.
