A judicial investigation was opened for “intentional homicide by cohabitant”, Monday August 8, AFP learned from the Nantes prosecutor’s office, confirming information from the newspaper West France. This decision follows the death of a woman on Saturday in Saint-Brévin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), near Saint-Nazaire. She was 58 years old, according to the daily, which also specifies that a 38-year-old man was brought to the Nantes courthouse and that the prosecution requested that he be remanded in custody.

According to the latest figures from the Ministry of the Interior, 146 women were victims of feminicides in 2019 and 102 in 2020. The collective “Femicides by companions or ex” counted 113 feminicides in 2021.

In total, in France, more than 200,000 women are victims of violence each year, according to the ministry.
