A large viewing platform was officially opened Monday near the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse site in Nova Scotia.
The 1,300 square meter structure was designed to improve access to the site and to prevent people from venturing onto the rocks when storms arrive.
The $ 3.1 million wood and concrete structure features steel guardrails knitted together to resemble fishing nets.
The dedication included a cleansing ceremony and opening prayer by members of the Mi’kmaq Friendship Center in Halifax.
More than 80% of the new platform is based on an old roadway.
Designers say it will deter thrill seekers from getting too close to the ocean when big waves start to crash against the bald rocks of the cove, but visitors will be free to roam the shore. when time permits.
