Finistère: the unique project of an orca park
The non-governmental organization Sea Shepherd is proposing the installation of a sanctuary off the coast of Brest to house orcas from marine amusement parks, banned in France from 2026.

The NGO Sea Shepherd France is proposing the installation of a sanctuary off the coast of Brest, in Finistère, to shelter orcas from marine amusement parks, banned in France from December 2026.

To comply with the law, Marineland, in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), plans to send Wikie and Keijo, the park’s two orcas, to Japan. A solution strongly criticized by animal rights associations. They estimate that a journey to Japan would be extremely long. Some of them propose the creation of a marine sanctuary in Canada or even directly in France.

Marineland continues to operate for the moment

The Marineland marine amusement park continues to operate and provide its shows until December 2026. On this date, the law will in fact prohibit the keeping of cetaceans in captivity for commercial purposes. The NGO Sea Shepherd France is therefore proposing the creation of a sanctuary off the coast of Brest (Finistère) so that the two orcas remain in France.
