The past (2013), The customer (2016), Everybody knows (2018), and today A hero, so many films by Iranian Asghar Farhadi that have passed through Cannes. His cinema is always greeted with enthusiasm by the public and the critics, as confirmed by “A hero” which leaves Wednesday, December 15. The filmmaker digs into his vision of Iranian society by deflecting censorship thanks to his constantly renewed talent as a storyteller.
Rahim is released from prison, where he is locked up for a debt. Divorced, his new companion has found a bag stuffed with gold coins that could allow him to repay his creditor. However, he decides to return the sum to its owner. This gesture earned him national recognition. But the investigation around this restitution reveals gray areas on the gesture and the sincerity of Rahim.

Suitcase stories that ruin the life of a “hero” are a movie classic. One of the most successful is No Country for Old men of the Coen Brothers (2008). Without being inspired by it, Asghar Farhadi seizes the subject to make the portrait of a man who rushes into a breach at the source of all his troubles. The author-director takes the opportunity to flay the Iranian administration, his favorite subject, even if she thwarts the schemes of this “hero”.
The state takes advantage of the story of this sympathetic character to show how a good Iranian should behave. The media and television, in particular, are targeted as the object of instrumentalization. But the governors also get their feet in the carpet. If the film is not a comedy, the plot of Rahim, the trap in which everyone falls, nourishes an ironic vision of Iranian society.
With A hero, Asghar Farhadi confirms his talent as a storyteller. One of the successes of the film is not to make Rahim a likable character. His interpreter Amir Jadidi, very fair, wears an ambiguous smile throughout the film. Rahim becomes entangled in his lies, one leading another into a dizzying vicious cycle. He compromises a charitable organization, forces journalists who have asked him to deny it, and alienates his family, now compromised. A whirlwind where the vitality of Iranian cinema asserts itself, after the recent Tehran Law.
