An investigation opened for “manslaughter” after the fatal accident at the ham fair in Bayonne

Rebound in the case of the terrible fatal road accident of April 16, 2022 on the sidelines of the Bayonne ham fair in which 4 young people from Dordogne lost their lives. The traditional Bayonne ham fair brings together thousands of people for four days and four nights. Around 5 a.m. this Saturday, after the festival had closed, four young people aged 20 to 21 from Dordogne, were killed in a violent collision with a tree on a central reservation. The drunk driver had lost control of his car at high speed. But the expertise opens the way to another hypothesis: that of a second vehicle involved in the drama. The Bayonne public prosecutor’s office has therefore opened a judicial investigation against x for “manslaughter“. The investigations are continuing.

The expert reports open up a new avenue for investigation.

The first scenario evoked a loss of control of the car on avenue du Maréchal Soult, not far from the city center. The car was traveling in the Biarritz-Bayonne direction. The occupants were returning from Biarritz where they had bought pizzas from a vending machine. At the time of the impact against the tree, the driver was positive for alcohol, as demonstrated by toxicological analyses. But the expertise carried out subsequently opens the way to a new hypothesis : that of a second car which would have cut the road or struck that of the victims. Suspicious traces on the sheet metal were brought to light.

The hypothesis of a second vehicle already mentioned

Based on witnesses to the tragedy, a first driver was heard by investigators shortly after the accident. But he was quickly cleared. The times between his visit to the scene and the accident did not correspond. The four young friends, all from Sarladais, had come to spend the weekend in Bayonne, for the ham fair festivities.
