An agent was injured this Saturday morning by a man armed with a knife, on the Old Port. The assailant was shot dead by law enforcement.

The Marseille prosecutor’s office announces, Saturday, March 12, the opening of an investigation for “attempted intentional homicide on a person holding public authority”, after the attack on four municipal police officers in the second arrondissement around 9:20 a.m. The assailant was shot.
According to the first testimonies cited by the court, the man “would have walked towards the patrol, gesticulating with a long-bladed ceramic kitchen knife in hand”, before striking one of the police officers, injured in the arm. The police used flashballs and a taser, without success. One of the officers used his service weapon, mortally wounding the assailant.
The investigation, entrusted to the Territorial Directorate of the Marseille judicial police, should make it possible to “determine the motivations of the gesture of this 57-year-old man of French nationality unknown to the police and intelligence services”as Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who came to the scene, had declared earlier.
