A preliminary investigation for “aggravated sexual assault” was opened after the complaint of a teenager who was performing a Universal National Service (SNU), announced, Sunday, April 30, the prosecution of Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne), confirming information from the weekly Marianne. “The facts were allegedly committed by a supervisor who has no known criminal record, as part of an SNU carried out in a high school in the Châlons sector”, detailed the prosecutor, Ombeline Mahuzier. The magistrate did not “not aware of other reports concerning him”.
Accusations of harassment in another SNU
This case echoes other accusations. In mid-April, the Secretary of State in charge of youth, Sarah El Haïry, seized the public prosecutor after accusations of sexual harassment, racism and humiliation during stays of the SNU, in the Hauts-de- Seine, in June and July 2022. According to a document revealed by the weekly politics, the acts were allegedly committed by a commander and a lieutenant-colonel against tutors and volunteers.
Major project of Emmanuel Macron, the SNU was launched in 2019, with the objective of making it mandatory in the long term. It offers teenagers aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to participate in a free “cohesion stay”, including sports, cultural and intellectual activities, then in an 84-hour mission of general interest. On April 23, the Head of State explained that he wanted his “gradual increase”, but “without making it mandatory across the country overnight.” In 2022, the device involved 32,000 young volunteers.
