An investigation was opened on April 19 for “non-assistance to anyone in danger” and “non-prevention of crime” concerning the assassination of Samuel Paty, announced the Paris prosecutor’s office to franceinfo, Thursday, June 16. The investigations were entrusted to the brigade for the repression of delinquency against persons (BRDP), said the prosecution.
The family of the teacher, killed in October 2020 near his college in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines), had filed a complaint in early April against the administration. “Mistakes were committed both on the side of National Education and on the side of the Ministry of the Interior, without which Samuel Paty could have been saved”had then declared their lawyer, Virginie Le Roy.
The complaint, 80 pages long, aimed “several agents from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of National Education” who had to know, directly or indirectly, the situation of Samuel Paty. One of the legal issues is to determine whether these agents could have been aware of the existence of a real, targeted and immediate threat aimed at the professor. The latter had been assassinated by a Russian refugee of Chechen origin, who accused him of having shown caricatures of Muhammad in class. The 18-year-old young man, who claimed responsibility for his action, congratulating himself on having “avenge the prophet”had been shot dead by the police.
