The CAQ candidate in the riding of Arthabaska and outgoing government whip, Éric Lefebvre, told TVA that he had recently been visited by a convoy of demonstrators who drove at low speed in their car, honking their horns loudly in front of his residence. family.
“It was the fuck Legault, fuck Lefebvre and freedom, freedom! “, he told the television network. The child of Mr. Lefebvre’s spouse, who has an intellectual disability, would have been particularly marked by the event.
François Legault strongly denounced the behavior of the demonstrators on Monday. “There are boundaries that have been crossed,” he said.
“Currently, there are candidates who are afraid. Their families are afraid. Their relatives are afraid. And it’s not true that we’re going to accept that in Quebec. It goes against the meaning of democracy and I think that all Quebecers are losers. It is the responsibility of each leader to call for calm,” said Mr. Legault.
“We saw it with what happened with Éric Lefebvre. It is totally unacceptable. And scaring a child has nothing to do with freedom. Intimidating, violating someone’s property is clearly not being for freedom,” he added.
Earlier in the election campaign, after Liberal incumbent Marwah Rizqy was the victim of death threats, François Legault asked the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) to accompany candidates in the election who feared for their safety. The head of the CAQ confirmed on Monday that some candidates had since contacted the police.
“It doesn’t make sense in Quebec to go through this and scare the world. […] We hadn’t seen that in the other campaigns before. It is worrying,” said Mr. Legault.
For her part, the liberal leader Dominique Anglade indicated on Monday that “after what happened with Marwah Rizqy”, there were “to my knowledge” no other cases of intimidation and threats against Liberal candidates.
“I learned about what had happened with Éric Lefebvre. For me, that people demonstrate, yes. But that they demonstrate in front of the residences of elected officials, that’s no, ”she said.
