Electric vehicle owners must stop at charging stations, but an innovation tested in the Paris region allows a vehicle to charge while driving using coils.

A new electric car could be the one of the future. It is equipped with coils in its floor, thanks to which it charges while driving. These coils receive the electricity produced by the road, which includes coils that emit energy by magnetic field. This is the principle of induction. No deployment date is known, because the prototype is only in the testing phase. In Paris, 30 meters of road have been equipped with coils. Hidden under the asphalt, a coil is installed every meter. Connected to the electricity network, it only lights up when the vehicle passes over it. The charge is thus continuous.

The only limit to innovation is that the faster the car goes, the weaker the current transmitted. For faster roads such as motorways, it is therefore necessary to use 10-metre-long coils, always buried in the middle of the road. Another road prototype is being tested with this configuration in Versailles (Yvelines). Today, this technology, the result of a European collaboration, works up to 90 km/h.
