An inmate dies following an altercation in Rivière-des-Prairies

A 27-year-old inmate was stabbed to death during a fight at Rivière-des-Prairies prison in Montreal on Saturday afternoon.

An altercation took place between groups of individuals inside the detention facility around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, the Sûreté du Québec said.

A detainee was seriously injured by a knife and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim is Anthony Aberzger, 27. He had been detained since June 30 on charges of break and enter and breach of an order in a marital context. He was awaiting a trial scheduled for the fall.

Anthony Aberzger posted on his Facebook account photos of him in prison during his incarceration in 2018.

Several antecedents

Azberger had several other cases pending at the Montreal courthouse related to charges of assault, break and enter, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and mischief, all in a marital context.

In the past, the Laval resident had received a five-year prison sentence in 2017 for conspiracy, breaking and entering and robbery.

This is the second inmate killed in Quebec since the beginning of the year. In April, Jason Gagné was killed in an altercation at Cowansville Penitentiary.
