an infernal pursuit, signed Michael Bay, with the flavor of a disaster film

Pretty war catch of Michael Bay than that of Jake Gyllenhaal in the first role ofAmbulance, on screens Wednesday, March 23. The actor goes from independent films to blockbusters, here under the leadership of an action film pundit, who directed Armageddon, transformers Where Pearl Harbor : heavy. Action thriller with its two hours of infernal pursuit in Los Angeles, Ambulance moved.

Will Sharp, a veteran of Afghanistan, calls on his brother, an inveterate robber, to ask him for money to save his wife from cancer. For only answer, he embeds it in the case of a bank, with 32 million dollars at the key. The case goes wrong and they are reduced to taking an ambulance hostage with a seasoned nurse who has just taken care of a seriously injured policeman. With all the Los Angeles police on the heels of the four corners of the city, an escape attempt begins that blocks all of LA

Whether science fiction, war or thriller, Michael Bay is like Roland Emmerich a filmmaker of excess for which the word blockbuster seems to have been invented. Big budget, stars, special effects are on the menu, often with a lot of pyrotechnics and a simplistic scenario. What is worth to these films the soft qualifier of “nags”. This is less the case with Ambulancewhere the character of Danny Sharp (Jake Gyllenhaal) is ambiguous, and the twists and turns of the action numerous, even a little too much over 2:16.

Good soups are made in old pots, and Ambulance chronicles a failed robbery as we have seen a hundred. But Michael Bay gives him a catastrophic extension in the sequence of situations which stops the expected “easy blow”. A classic that Bay enriches by broadening its subject to a Los Angeles off the beaten track, with shady areas in what turns out to be a road movie. A road movie carried out at breakneck speed, while the genre is rather contemplative. Michael Bay hijacks the codes. car chase movie, Ambulance connects stunts, machine-gun fires, but also spares good scenes of dialogues between these two brothers, of which one black, was adopted.

Jake Gyllenhaal (Zodiac, Spider-Man: Far from Home) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, candy man) thicken the scenario with their fraternal-conflictual relationships, while emphasizing action. Note that the film does not skimp on hemoglobin, which is why it is prohibited for at least 12 years. With its share of implausibilities and inconsistencies, and in the end a somewhat complacent development, Ambulance would have benefited from being shortened. But preceded by an atypical robbery, and investigating a festival of crumpled sheets, until a desperate headlong rush, Ambulance remains a pleasant surprise.
