A seasonal agricultural worker died on Wednesday June 19 in Rome, two days after being abandoned by his employer with a severed arm following a work accident. The Italian Minister of Labor, Marina Elvira Calderone, denounced before the deputies “an act of barbarity”. She specified that the man in his thirties, an Indian national, “worked without having a valid contract”.

As of Monday, the Federation of Agricultural Workers reported that an Indian worker “who was cutting hay had his arm torn off by a machine and suffered other serious fractures.” “Apart from the horror of the accident, we must add the fact that instead of being rescued by his employers, he was dumped like a bag of garbage near his home”she denounced.

“His partner and friends contacted us, then called for help. He was airlifted to a hospital in Rome but died midday” Wednesday, the carabinieri command of Latina, the city where the accident took place, told AFP. A large number of immigrants, particularly Indians, work in this agricultural region located about sixty kilometers southeast of Rome. An investigation was opened for failure to help and manslaughter.
