The elected official opposition of the City of Montreal called Wednesday morning for an independent investigation into the work climate of employees from diversity and the process of handling complaints of the City in order to make a complete diagnosis of the problem. They said they were “outraged and indignant” by the investigation of the Duty about the racism and discrimination experienced by some thirty City employees.
The elected representatives of Ensemble Montréal are also urging the City to review its processes and establish “a real zero-tolerance policy”. They believe that “an in-depth examination of the allegations must systematically take place at the time of filing a complaint” and that “severe sanctions must follow” in order to make those responsible accountable.
The role of the systemic racism commissioner of the City of Montreal, Bochra Manaï, was also questioned by the elected officials of the official opposition, to know if she is “capable of exercising a certain power on this problem”, pointing out that since his hiring two years ago, “progress has not taken place as quickly as hoped”. “No impact has been perceived by the city’s racialized employees,” argued the official opposition in its press release.
