The Covid crisis has left psychological scars on many young people. Anorexia, bulimia… Eating disorders have notably exploded. At the Nantes University Hospital (Loire-Atlantique), the outpatient service supports around thirty of them every day.
The most ordinary actions can sometimes seem insurmountable. A young man is hospitalized in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique) for anorexia. The slightest food gives him an almost panic fear of gaining weight. This patient has been treated for a month at the request of his parents and with his consent, aware that he must put an end to this uncontrollable fear. Like him, a million people suffer from eating disorders in France. A number of cases were diagnosed after the lockdowns. At the Nantes University Hospital, a third special unit was created after Covid, as the demand was high.
Difficult to find a place
The problem is that you have to wait six months to be admitted to one of the units. This is three times more than before the health crisis. However, not all patients have the luxury of waiting. Isore, for example, obtained a place at the last minute: “A radiologist told me: ‘You’re 22 years old and your spine is like that of a sixty-year-old woman.'” She was not affected by anorexia before Covid, it was the confinement which precipitated everything.
