The increase in the minimum wage to 1,600 euros net, a flagship proposal of the New Popular Front, has its supporters and its detractors.
Since the results of the second round of the legislative elections, the prospect of an increase of more than 14% in the minimum wage has greatly worried some business leaders. This is the case for Pierre Ferrand, who employs 42 people in Brittany. In the current economic context, the additional cost of increasing the minimum wage to 1,600 euros net would simply not be sustainable for his company. “The increase in the minimum wage is understandable, but what is difficult is the increase in all the charges that will go alongside it.”comments the sales director of the company Gedimat Ferrand.
According to another business leader in favour of increasing wages, to compensate for the implementation of such a measure without weighing on competitiveness, a drastic reduction in employer contributions would be necessary. “It’s mainly how to have equity compared to those who are already at 1,600 euros”says Erwan Montel, director of the LG Métal company.
