To celebrate the arrival of the Olympic flame on Wednesday May 8 in Marseille, in Bouches-du-Rhône, more than 6,000 members of the police were mobilized.

Systematic searches at the entrance to the Old Port (Bouches-du-Rhône) with 150,000 spectators expected. 10,000 law enforcement officers have received very clear instructions: leave nothing to chance, because the arrival of the flame is a security challenge. In recent weeks, the intelligence services have even combed through the profiles of residents living within the security perimeter, in order to prevent an attack, excesses, violence, but also accidents.

500 agents deployed on the water

On their launches, the firefighters make rounds to intervene in the event of a fire breaking out on a boat or a drowning. “The risk is that a person will fall and not be able to get back on their boat alone, so that’s why we will intervene quickly”, explains a firefighter. Offshore, the same vigilance with nearly 500 agents are deployed. Their mission is essential: no ship is authorized to approach the Belem.
