An imam from Beaucaire (Gard), placed in police custody on suspicion of anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook, was presented to the judge of freedoms and detention on Wednesday November 1 who decided to place him in pre-trial detention, reports the public prosecutor’s office in Nîmes on the social network “He will appear Thursday, November 2 at 9 a.m. before the Nîmes criminal court for immediate appearance”specifies the prosecution.

This imam from Beaucaire was arrested during the night from Monday to Tuesday at Marignane airport and placed in police custody for “apology of terrorism in connection with an online public communication service” and for “public incitement to hatred or violence on grounds of race or religion”.

The man in his thirties is suspected of having made anti-Semitic remarks on Facebook, calling for the Jews to be fought, and advocating terrorism, in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas.

At the time of his arrest, he was returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia and made a stopover in Jordan, sources close to the case told France Bleu Gard Lozère earlier. His home in Beaucaire and the mosque where he officiates were searched.
