Extreme heat waves hit Italy in particular on Tuesday, July 18. 46.3°C were recorded in Sicily, as in Sardinia, where Raphaëlle Schapira is located.

In a deserted village square in Sardinia (Italy), the temperature is between 42 and 44°C. This Tuesday, July 18 on the island, temperatures of up to 46°C were recorded. The heat is stifling and it is very difficult to stay outside, reports Raphaëlle Schapira, special correspondent in Sardinia. Teams of rangers have been deployed all over the island to watch over any possible outbreaks of fire. In this type of plain, the risk can come, for example, from agricultural activity, with fires which, due to the wind, can spread to the surrounding forests and hills.

Red alert maintained until Saturday

Trucks contain extinguishers, small reserves of water, enough to act from the first spark, while waiting for the arrival of the firefighters. And it is on the beach that the temperatures are, Tuesday, July 18, the most bearable. A veil of cloud limited the temperature records expected on Tuesday, but the heat will continue intensely in the days to come. The red alert was maintained until Saturday in Sardinia.
