The route of these men on camels is not traced on any map. In the north of Saudi Arabia, in one of the hottest deserts in the world, twenty French people have set themselves a challenge. All want to cross hostile and arid lands under 45 degrees. “We have to go there”, launches a traveler. To navigate, they are armed only with a compass and a satellite map. “There, great distances like that, we can’t assess whether it’s one kilometer, ten kilometers”she adds, pointing to the horizon.
40 days without support
They have to find their way through the dunes for 40 days without assistance. The experience is extraordinary, but aims to understand the effects of climate change. A few days before their departure, they were preparing their things: anti-UV clothing, caps, freeze-dried food and some survival medication. “That’s basic capsules, salt. We’re probably going to sweat a lot so in addition to losing water, we’re going to lose sodium”, then detailed a member of the expedition. They are not seasoned adventurers. They agreed for science to test their limits. For 40 days, their journey will be long and will reserve them misadventures.
