United States: an increasingly deadly cold snap

United States: an increasingly deadly cold snap – (France info)

At least fifty people have died in the United States due to severe winter weather. Freezing temperatures, snowfall and icy conditions make traffic difficult, if not impossible.

American television channels broadcast many animal rescues. On Lake Michigan, freezing wind and humidity have naturally formed amazing ice sculptures. In the plains of New York State, the blizzard continues to blow. At the same time, a thick layer of snow has been accumulating for more than a week. The cold wave affecting the Midwest continues to rage, causing the deaths of fifty people across the country. In the Midwest, and in almost the entire eastern part of the country, temperatures remain negative on Saturday, as far as Texas.

Income impacted

“If you work in a field that requires you to be outside, such as construction, mining or agriculture, it is much more difficult. So this has an impact on household income and productivity”, explains Tammy Carleton, environmental economist. Everywhere, the cold and snow make travel difficult, and schools are forced to close. Weather services are forecasting a mild spell next week.
