Faced with the influx of visitors, the city of Venice, Italy, has implemented an entry fee for tourists who come for the day. This measure came into force on Thursday April 25.

Thursday, April 25 in the morning, Venice (Italy), one of the most visited cities in the world, experimented for the first time with its entrance tax for daily tourists. In front of the station, the main access to the historic center, ticket offices have been installed. For an American, paying to get in is a no-brainer. Those who stay overnight do not need to pay, but have a mandatory QR code. “They have to, there are too many people otherwise”says a French woman.

Checkpoints in the city

Access is chargeable on the busiest days to encourage tourists to postpone their stay. “We do it to discourage daily tourism in days like today, when tourist flows must be regulated”, assures Michaele Zuin, deputy finance officer of Venice. Checkpoints were set up in the city. The measure goes down well with tourists.

For their part, angry residents organized a demonstration on the outskirts of the old town. They believe that the measure will not prevent mass tourism, but will transform Venice into “amusement park”. They would have preferred that the city set a limited number of visitors.
